India: Passengers demanded another captain after three go-arounds

In India, after two failed landing attempts in Mumbai, a diversion to Udaipur and another go-around maneuver, passengers have demanded that the airline replace the captain. A domestic flight operated by the low-cost airline Indigo was affected.

On 13 June 2023, Flight 6E2441, Airbus A321neo, registration VT-IBJ, was scheduled to fly from Lucknow to Mumbai. Until the first attempt to land at the actual destination, it was a completely unspectacular Indigo domestic flight.

The pilots were not exactly lucky with the landing, because despite good weather conditions, two attempts in Mumbai had to be aborted. According to local media reports, the passengers were not informed about the reasons. The captain then decided to switch to Udaipur Airport. But there was little luck there either, because instead of a normal landing, there was a kind of touch-and-go maneuver, because this attempt also had to be aborted and the captain gave the instruction to go-around.

The fourth attempt to land was then successful and the VT-IBJ touched down safely in Udaipur. However, the passengers were not at their destination. What followed is not exactly commonplace. According to the Hindustan Times, numerous passengers then demanded that the captain be replaced before the onward flight to Mumbai. It cites travelers who were upset that it took four attempts to arrive at the "wrong" airport.

After a long discussion, the budget airline Indigo bowed to the pressure and then actually exchanged the commander. But it took some time until it arrived at Udaipur Airport. After more than three hours, the Airbus A321neo was able to take off and then reached Mumbai Airport without any further go-around manoeuvres.

In principle, pilots always opt for the so-called go-around for safety reasons. The causes are often of a technical nature or, as a precaution, the car has to take off because of sudden crosswinds. Occasionally there may be unexpected objects, vehicles, people, animals or even other aircraft on the runway. The airline Indigo did not provide any information on the reasons for the three go-around maneuvers, so that an assessment is not possible. What is unusual, however, is that the captain was replaced after loud pressure from the passengers.
