Innsbruck Airport started 2020 with a five percent increase in passengers. In January, 175.711 passengers were counted. The number of flight movements also increased by one percent to 1.587 take-offs or landings. In February 2020, the Tyrolean airport had 196.646 passengers - an increase of six percent. The number of movements increased by four percent to 1.674 take-offs or landings. The corona pandemic caused a sharp decline from March 2020.

The number of passengers fell by 63 percent to 77.093 travelers. Also only 838 take-offs or landings were carried out - a minus of 53 percent. It went even further in April: There was only one landing, one take-off and 143 passengers. It was a charter flight operated by Lauda that brought harvest workers to Innsbruck.

May 2020 was probably the worst month: The Tyrolean airport did not record a single commercial flight movement and therefore had zero passengers. But that also reached the absolute low point, because Innsbruck has been able to pick up again in accordance with the circumstances of the pandemic. In June 2020 there were at least 18 flight movements with 492 passengers on board. The minus compared to the same month last year is 98 percent and 99 percent respectively.

In the busy month of July 2020, 87.838 passengers used Innsbruck Airport. In direct comparison with the same month last year, this means a minus of 87 percent. 78 percent fewer commercial take-offs or landings were carried out: 185 flight movements were counted. In August 2020 Innsbruck had 11.833 travelers (minus 81 percent) in 193 take-offs or landings (minus 75 percent).

The view at the Tyrolean airport is extremely mixed, because numerous travel warnings that have been issued for Tyrol and all of Austria have an extremely negative effect on demand. The airport has been on short-time work with most of the workforce since October 1, 2020. Innsbruck makes the lion's share of the annual business in the winter months, because Schicharter have traditionally been in particularly high demand. How Innsbruck will perform in the upcoming season is not in the hands of the management, but depends on the further development of the corona pandemic, the entry and quarantine regulations and the booking behavior of the passengers. Airport boss Marco Pernetta commented on the current situation a few days ago in Aviation Direct short interview.
