Germany's largest airport, Frankfurt am Main, counted around five million passengers in June 2022. This was the strongest single month since the beginning of the corona pandemic.
In a direct comparison with May 2022, the number of passengers increased by around 400.000. Compared to June 2022, the increase was 181 percent, but it was 24 percent below the value that was reported in June 2019. Frankfurt am Main is currently suffering particularly badly from a lack of staff. As the largest provider, Lufthansa has canceled numerous flights for the summer of 2022. There are now also restrictions in the area of freight. In the cargo segment, Frankfurt had to record a decline of around 12 percent compared to the same month last year. Around 163.900 tons of air freight and mail were handled.
“In the first half of 2022, passenger traffic at many of our Group airports grew faster than previously expected. We are happy that people are happy to travel again. In Frankfurt, passenger numbers rose by more than 135 percent in June compared to February this year. This shows how strong the demand for air travel is. We sincerely regret that our passengers in Frankfurt currently have to put up with longer waiting times in the terminals, including at baggage claim, during rush hours. We are working intensively with all our partners to ensure that we can again offer the quality standards that our passengers expect in the medium term," says Fraport boss Stefan Schulte.
