Because of around 100 cycling demonstrators, the police arrived on Saturday with a large contingent at Leipzig / Halle Airport. They even had a squadron on site to keep the activists in check.

The planned expansion of the airport is viewed critically by so-called climate protectors. They want to prevent Leipzig / Halle Airport from being enlarged in the cargo area. Another point of the demonstration was the protest against deportations, which are also occasionally carried out from this airport.

It is not the first rally, because in July 2021 Some climate protection activists blocked the access roads to the DHL hub. At that time there were 52 arrests and the logistics company claims it suffered several million euros in damage. Since the executive branch assumed that the DHL hub could again be in the sights of the activists this time, this was secured by officers from the federal police and police officers from Saxony, Hesse and North Rhine-Westphalia. In terms of the number of people, the executive branch was clearly in the clear majority.

This time, the Post subsidiary DHL even reached out and wanted to make parts of the parking lot available for holding the demonstration. According to the police, the situation was calm this time and the environmentalists held their rally cycling and peacefully. Further demonstrations have been announced.
