Qantas boss Alan Joyce seems to slowly no longer have any sympathy for border closings and lockdowns in Australia. He is now publicly calling for the measures to be lifted. The airline is reacting to the recent lockdowns that have been imposed in various cities in Australia.
The borders of the southern continent have been largely closed since March 2020. There are few exceptions that Qantas' international air travel could benefit from. Accordingly, flight operations are largely paralyzed. Joyce denounces the behavior of the authorities: They would send entire metropolises into lockdown "because of one or two Covid cases". In his view, this is “disproportionate”.
Australia and the neighboring state of New Zealand have been causing a sensation since the beginning of the corona pandemic with some tough measures. Depending on the season, the number of new infections increases again and entire regions are put under lockdowns because - from a European perspective - fewer cases. The exit restrictions are much stricter in some places in Europe.
