Air traffic between the European Union and Libya has been greatly reduced for several years. The background is the political situation in the African country. On Monday, September 20, 2021 Lumiwings started a non-stop connection between Luqa and Mitiga.
It is a charter connection operated on behalf of Medavia. The Boeing 737-300 with the registration SX-LWA was used on the first flight. The first flight between the two countries became possible after a visit by Libyan Prime Minister Alhamid Dbeibah and the signing of a letter of intent to resume this important air link.
Medavia is working with Maltese travel agencies such as FCM Travel and Planit to sell the tickets. Although both Air Malta and Alitalia showed great interest in operating the lucrative route, Medavia ultimately won the tender.
