Berlin-Brandenburg Airport recorded a slight upward trend in March 2021. In direct comparison with February 2021, I had around 73.000 passengers. 220.250 travelers were counted. The decisive factor was probably the increased demand in the direction of Palma de Mallorca.

Nevertheless, one year after the start of the global travel restrictions due to the corona pandemic at all German airports, the number of passengers remains at a very low level: The passenger volume at BER was only around a fifth compared to March 2020. In March of the pre-crisis year 2019, just under three million passengers were still handled at the Schönefeld and Tegel airports at the time. Last March, around 4.000 flight movements were counted at BER. In comparison, around 2020 aircraft took off and landed at Schönefeld and Tegel Airports in March 13.000. In March 2019 there were more than 23.000.

Around 1.900 tons were handled in the BER freight facilities last month. That is around 400 tons more than in February of this year. In the case of air freight, the decline compared to the same month of March 2020 is significantly lower and is only 18,2 percent. In March 2020 it was 2.300 tons of air freight, in March 2019 around 2.800 tons of air freight.

“The increased interest in flights to Mallorca immediately after the quarantine regulation was lifted speaks for a high pent-up willingness to travel. People want to go on vacation. They also accept corona-related requirements such as an obligation to test before departure. This is a sign that air traffic can gradually recover with a coherent test and hygiene strategy ”, says BER boss Engelbert Lütke Daldrup.
