Podgorica: Air Montenegro suffers from high fuel costs

The airline Air Montenegro has flown a loss of around 1,6 million euros in the first nine months of the current year. A reduced route network is being offered in the 2022/23 winter timetable.

The management of the carrier based in Podgorica sees the reason for the shortfall in the significantly increased fuel costs. Among other things, it is argued that compared to the previous year, expenditure increased by 4,1 million euros. If you hadn't had this effect, you would have been in the black.

Air Montenegro estimates the total expenditure for fuel in the first three quarters of the current year at EUR 4,1 million. Furthermore, the management added that it should be about a third of the total expenditure. The fact that it was not possible to build on the predecessor Montenegro Airlines and had to rebuild almost everything from scratch is said to have had a negative effect on the result. This also includes distribution agreements.

Four routes in the 2022/23 winter timetable

In the first three quarters of 2022, Air Montenegro had about 300.000 passengers on board. The fleet currently consists of two Embraer 195s. Trade Air also occasionally flies an Airbus A320 for the carrier from Podgorica as part of a wet lease agreement. In the 2022/23 winter flight schedule, the company plans to serve three destinations on its own account. These are offered from Tivat and the capital of Montenegro.

This is a route from Podgorica to Belgrade that will be served up to twice a day. Ljubljana will be served up to four times a week in winter 2022/23. The number of frequencies varies between two and four cycles depending on the week. From Tivat, seven rotations per week are to be served to Belgrade. Istanbul is to be headed for up to four times a week, although there are also four clear differences in the number of flight frequencies depending on the week.
