The Pilatus-Bahnen AG will be on the Drachenberg for the next 40 years. In the summer of 2021, the first railcar of the new generation took off on the original route of the steepest rack railway in the world - despite the challenging situation on the market.

Extensive test drives and acceptance by the Federal Office of Transport were on the agenda. An innovative control system and other technological innovations bring more comfort and more sustainable operation.

Better prospects than ever

Large glass fronts in the new cars provide a 360-degree panoramic view and an even more spectacular driving experience. The renowned designer Thomas Küchler, who grew up at the foot of Mount Pilatus, designed the new railcars. He chose a timeless design with soft radii and an elegant design language. The cars come in the classic Pilatus red, accompanied by iconic LED lighting on the fronts. In the passenger compartment, light, warm colors and a high-quality floor covering create an elegant atmosphere. “We rely on first-class, stylish vehicles with high-quality materials. For us, this is adventure travel in the 21st century combined with the latest passenger safety,” says Godi Koch, CEO of Pilatus-Bahnen AG.

New pioneering achievements for a heritage that is unique worldwide

The unique rack and pinion system, which Eduard Locher and his team created more than 130 years ago, shows hardly any signs of wear and remains practically unchanged. In the future, the new traction vehicles will operate in double traction. A second platform is being built in Alpnachstad. Thanks to this, guests can board the eight railcars at the same time without any additional maneuvering. Instead of traversers, three new track turners – custom-made unique items from the Emmentaler Maschinenfabrik Steck – will be installed.

Construction work on course

All eight new railcars will be in service from spring 2023. The track turners are to be replaced by April/May 2022 and the valley station will also shine in new splendor for the 2022 season. Work on the mountain station will continue this year.

For lovers of the old Pilatus railcars, it's time to pack their bags this season and experience the 80-year-old railcars one last time. After that, one will be in the Swiss Museum of Transport in Lucerne and two will remain with Pilatus-Bahnen AG for special trips.
