The insolvent airline Thai Airways is withdrawing from Vienna-Schwechat again. The carrier reactivated the connection to Bangkok on November 17, 2017, but suspended it due to the corona pandemic. Now it is finally over, because the personnel employed in Austria have meanwhile also received the notice, the carrier confirmed to Aviation Direct.

The corona pandemic hit Thai Airways heavily financially. The carrier took refuge in bankruptcy proceedings, although it is still unclear how this will end. In the course of cost-saving measures, the route network and the workforce were greatly reduced. Vienna will no longer be served in the future. In a statement, Thai Airways confirms that at the end of 2020 the staff employed in Austria were terminated and the local office was closed. A return to Vienna-Schwechat is no longer planned - at least for the foreseeable future. According to official information, eight employees are affected.

However, the Vienna-Bangkok route is still available from competitors Austrian Airlines and Eva Air. Both carriers have no plans to abandon this route. Due to the corona pandemic, however, the flight schedule has been thinned out considerably and there are always short-term adjustments. For the summer of 2021, both AUA and Eva Air plan to fly between Vienna and Bangkok.
