The Südwestbahn (SOB) connects the German-speaking Swiss cities with the most beautiful regions of Switzerland with the “Treno Gottardo”, “Voralpen-Express” and “Aare Linth” trains.

The Gotthard mountain route is one of the most spectacular Swiss railway routes: Lakes, mountains and lots of engineering can be discovered from the train from Zurich, Basel and Lucerne towards Ticino. Among other things, the train winds through the three helical tunnels near Wassen in order to be able to dive into the 15-kilometer-long Gotthard summit tunnel at Göschenen. In Airolo, the Treno Gottardo of the south-eastern railway reaches the highest point of its journey at 1141 meters above sea level, before continuing via another spiral tunnel to the lowest point in the direction of Locarno at 197 meters above sea level. The "most beautiful connection between north and south" can not only be discovered on one trip: Smaller and larger stops along the route invite you to cultural excursions or nature experiences.

The Southeast Railway has set itself the goal of conveniently discovering the regions of Switzerland. On excursions, not every minute counts, it is important to experience the beauties along the routes. In addition to the Treno Gottardo, the Südwestbahn offers a travel option from St.Gallen via Rapperswil and Arth-Goldau to Lucerne with the Voralpen-Express. The "most beautiful combination of nature and culture" fulfills its promise: In St.Gallen, the monastery district with its library, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is worth a visit. For example, the largest contiguous raised moor area in Switzerland near Rothenthurm can be viewed from the train. The third city connection of the south-east railway "Aare Linth" runs from the Swiss federal city of Bern via Zurich to Chur. The "most beautiful combination of city, country and river" leads along dozens of bodies of water and allows you to rediscover the Swiss Mittelland or the Churfirsten region.

The aforementioned connections are made with copper-colored low-floor multiple units of the "Traverso" type. They have 359 seats, 68 of which are in 1st class (2+1 seating). All seats are equipped with sockets. In the comfortable trains with a modern room concept and large windows, there are two bistro zones with vending machines for drinks and snacks, a family compartment and spaces for bicycles and skis.

From Austria, various starting points for journeys with the south-east railway – such as Zurich (Treno Gottardo and Aare Linth) or Sargans (Aare Linth) – can be reached directly with day and night connections. St.Gallen can also be reached quickly via the transfer stations at St. Margrethen or Buchs on the Swiss border.
