The Thomas Cook Group collapsed about a year ago. Several rescue attempts failed and the United Kingdom government ultimately won out. Now the traditional brand is making a comeback under the umbrella of the Chinese group Fosun.
This secured the rights to the fire and is now starting as the travel platform “Thomas Cook”. The business model is currently limited to trips that can be started from the United Kingdom without quarantine. The form of the billing is also unusual, as payment only has to be made after returning from vacation. They also want to enable free rebooking to other destinations.
The Financial Times reports that it currently employs 50 people. Most of these are said to be former Thomas Cook employees. There are obviously cooperations with Easyjet and the consolidator Paxport. Furthermore, hotel brands of the Fonsun Group are in sales.
The Thomas Cook brand is badly damaged due to the bankruptcy, which is why it will probably be difficult to create trust with them. Therefore, the customer funds flow into an escrow account and are only paid out to the company after the traveler has returned. In this way one also wants to avoid expensive customer money protection. According to the Financial Times, Fosun recently poured 6,5 million euros into the portal. If successful, the model will also be extended to Belgium, France and the Netherlands. In China, the Thomas Cook brand is already being used for domestic travel sales.
