In the morning hours of January 23, 2023, three airports in Lithuania received an anonymous bomb threat demanding that Russian citizens be given visas again. As a precaution, the terminals in Vilnius, Kaunas and Palanga were evacuated.
The Baltic state executive confirmed to local media that the bomb threat emails had arrived at the three mentioned airports. In terms of content, it is threatened that if visas are still not issued to Russian citizens, an explosive device that should have been deposited at one of the three airports will be triggered.
For safety reasons, the police decided that the three airports would be evacuated. Subsequently, these were meticulously searched by the executive for a possible bomb. The background is also that the threat was sent to Vilnius, Kaunas and Palanga airports, but the anonymous e-mail did not reveal where the alleged explosive device was hidden.
After a meticulous search, the police were able to give the all-clear. No bomb or other dangerous object was found at any of the three airports mentioned. However, a spokesman for the Ministry of Interior emphasizes that from the point of view of the executive branch, the fact that visas for Russian citizens should be reinstated should be "an interesting detail". The identity of the anonymous sender could not be determined. The police think someone made a bad joke, but that doesn't protect them from prosecution.
