Westjet is reducing air service between Canada and Europe

The Canadian airline Westjet will no longer serve some European routes from Halifax, Vancouver and Toronto. The carrier will initially discontinue these at the beginning of the 2023 summer flight schedule period. A possible resumption in 2024 is expressly reserved.

So far, Westjet has had seasonal non-stop flights from Halifax to London-Gatwick, Dublin, Glasgow and Paris-Charles de Gaulle in the summer months. These will no longer be offered in summer 2023. European non-stop flights from Vancouver and Toronto to Europe are also affected.

Westjet is currently in a renovation phase. They want to replace the system of decentralized hubs by concentrating on a central hub. This is expected to result in significant cost advantages. However, this also comes at the expense of connectivity, as many passengers prefer non-stop flights.

The service between Halifax and Frankfurt am Main is also affected by the reductions. There are alternatives on this route. For example, Condor and Eurowings Discover each fly three times a week. Westjet reserves the right to reactivate the seasonal routes that are now being discontinued in the coming year.
