Exactly a year ago today, Terminals 1 and 1A at Vienna International Airport were used for the last time to handle passengers. Terminal 2, which was under renovation and only served as a passage, has also been closed since then.
On March 18, 2020, Flughafen Wien AG justified the temporary relocation of all flights to Terminal 3 with the following words: "Due to the very low number of passengers due to numerous flight cancellations, Vienna Airport will temporarily handle the handling of all scheduled flights from tomorrow, March 19.3.2020, 3 in Terminal XNUMX together ”.
The resumption of operation of the currently inactive terminal buildings is not yet in sight, because the number of passengers is still at an extremely low level due to the corona pandemic. Terminal 3 is nowhere near full, because the complicated entry and quarantine regulations in various countries continue to result in low demand. The few flights that are currently offered are in some cases extremely weak.
Vienna is not an isolated case, however, because airlines, airports, tour operators, hotels and many other industries are suffering from the effects of the corona pandemic in almost all of Europe. Everyone is hoping for a quick recovery, but the slow vaccination rate and the disaster surrounding the vaccine from AstraZeneca are now dampening optimism.
Terminal 1 at Vienna Airport is officially completely closed. But that is not completely correct, because there is a tenant who is not allowed to close for legal reasons. This is the airport pharmacy, which is located in the transition between the parking garage and the check-in area. The employees of the pharmacy hold the position lonely And luckily, many people who work at the airport know where it is and so there is at least a bit of "life" in the public area of Terminal 1.
