Wizz Air CEO József Varádi has brought the group of companies he leads into play as a possible feeder airline for the Polish Star Alliance member Lot. He even recommended to local media that the state-owned carrier should concentrate on long-haul flights.
Varádi believes that it would be much cheaper for Lot to outsource its short and medium-haul flights, which serve as feeders at the Warsaw-Chopin hub, to Wizz Air. Lot itself should then only be active on long-haul flights. This is what he would do if he were managing director of the Polish airline, because, according to Varádi, all “full-service carriers” would make losses with short-haul flights. Wizz Air, on the other hand, knows how you can make money with it.
However, Varádi also admitted that his statement did not mean that there would be talks or even negotiations with Lot. Rather, it would simply be his very personal opinion as a private person. The statement by the Wizz Air group boss is nevertheless a little explosive, because they are obviously looking for cooperation partners.
It wasn't that long ago that Wizz Air didn't want to have anything to do with working with tour operators and/or agencies. The view was that only direct sales were advantageous. There were also no connecting flights offered. This attitude has now been softened, for example A contract has been concluded with Tui Austria. This means that the tour operator can also integrate Wizz flight segments into his package tours.
Within the company group, which currently consists of Wizz Air Hungary, Wizz Air Malta, Wizz Air UK and Wizz Air Abu Dhabi, it has been possible to officially book connecting flights for some time. However, “Mix&Match” has one very decisive, customer-hostile disadvantage: The booking process is designed so that you book individual flights. The carrier also points out that you are not being sold a continuous connection, but rather individual point-to-point flights and therefore no liability is assumed in the event of delays and/or cancellations. This can be extremely disadvantageous for passengers.
