On Monday, the Boeing 767-300 with the registration N651UA suffered a bird strike at Zurich-Kloten Airport. This happened during take-off, which was then canceled by the pilots for safety reasons.
The spotter portal “Easyspotting” documented that the long-haul jet did not return to the gate, but that the passengers left the aircraft on the apron. However, normal stairs and no emergency slides were used. The occupants were brought to the terminal by bus and, according to United Airlines, other flight connections were also rebooked.
The bird strike caused considerable material damage to the N651UA, but the take-off was terminated professionally and safely. There were no injuries because all passengers and crew members were able to safely exit the Boeing 767-300 via stairs. The affected machine must now be repaired, although it is not yet possible to predict the extent of the damage. It is very likely that the engine will have to be replaced, which is financially expensive for the carrier.
Upon request, United Airlines confirmed the incident and emphasized that all occupants could leave the long-haul jet unscathed. Those affected were rebooked on alternative connections to New York and meal vouchers were made available if necessary. Hotel rooms were also organized for travelers. The N651UA will be examined by a specialist company in Zurich and made airworthy again.
