Malta, which is heavily dependent on tourism, wants to welcome tourists again on a large scale from June 1, 2021. In this context, easing will start on May 10, 2021. For example, restaurants and bars should be allowed to serve food and drinks at the table again. For the time being, however, there is a curfew at 17:00 p.m.
There are currently domestic travel restrictions in the smallest EU member state. For example, the Gozo Channel Line may only be used by commuters and for other valid reasons. The government wants to prevent the corona virus from being exchanged between the islands of Gozo and Malta. There are no such restrictions for Comino, but only four people live on this island and all ferry services are tourist-oriented.
New ferry from the capital to Mgarr (Gozo)
For residents and holidaymakers, there will soon be another news: After years of hitchhiking, an additional ferry service will be set up between Valletta and Mgarr (Gozo). So far, the only way to travel between Malta and Gozo without your own boat has been the Gozo Channel Line. This runs between Ċirkewwa and Mgarr (Gozo). In contrast to the existing service, the new service will only transport pedestrians. The government calls the subsidized new ferry a "fast service".
In the previous year, the effects of the corona pandemic on Maltese tourism were clearly evident. There was a yawning emptiness on the few sandy beaches and hotels suffered from underground occupancy. This year the aim is to lure tourists into the country on a large scale again with the Green Pass or, alternatively, with negative PCR tests. On the Maltese islands themselves, around 50 percent of the population are vaccinated against Covid-19.
