The airline Wizz Air is reducing its presence at Dortmund Airport even before the official closure of the base. The number of stationed aircraft will be reduced to an Airbus A320.

Both the airport and Wizz Air emphasize that only the station will be closed, but Dortmund should still be served from other bases. In the winter flight schedule 2021/22, however, the presence will be significantly smaller, because the reservation system of the low-cost airline shows that numerous routes will no longer be offered in the future.

Among others, Marrakech, Santorini, Thessaloniki, Athens, Keflavik, Palma de Mallorca, Split, Fuerteventura, Split and Catania fall victim to the red pen. The already paused routes to Lisbon and Porto are no longer to be reactivated. Since the above list contains some classic seasonal destinations, it remains to be seen whether or not Wizz Air will reissue these in the 2022 summer flight schedule.

Marrakech and Fuerteventura are actually popular summer destinations. Due to the longer flight time - for example in comparison with Dortmund-Vienna - an operation within the scope of cabotage seems to fail due to the flight duty regulations. Staff stationed in Dortmund would be an advantage for this.

The only German base was only opened last year and is supposed to to be closed on October 24, 2021. It is therefore no coincidence that many routes will be discontinued until October 23, 2021. Some are suspended from the beginning of September and are used again during the autumn break. In any case, the end for Athens will be on September 3, 2021. The Vienna route, however, should in Will be reactivated shortly.
